My first attempt of achieving soft glow the easy way using Photoshop CS3. I took this shot while walking through Emancipation Park earlier this week.

A very arresting image. What I often do is create a duplicate layer, then apply the glow, then tinker with the opacity to get just the right amount for the image. Also, I sometimes selective delete certain areas for emphasis. But it's a great effect in your shot! I never thought of applying to a flower before.

Excellent processing makes a great photo. (There's a pretty good glow generator in GIMP too...)

Nice one, you made it work well. There's lots of ways to create this, both using filters and in Photoshop, so good work on your first go.
